Uncooled, C-Band, Multi-Wavelength DWDM Transmitter enabled by Adaptive Self-Monitoring

This project uses adaptive self-monitoring to enable uncooled operation in a harsh environment of a C-band, wavelength selectable, multi-wavelength DWDM transmitter. The program will utilize novel sensors monolithically integrated into the transmitter PIC to intelligently monitor and provide feedback to adaptively and independently control the key parameters of the transmitter array. The design will operate over a wide temperature range (0 to 70C) without the use of a thermo-electric cooler (TEC). Phase I included research to show feasibility of the approach, including design of sensing elements and appropriate algorithms, experimental verification of sensor concepts and temperature effects on device performance and reliability. Phase II will include detailed design and fabrication of the uncooled PIC including integrated sensors, packaging of these devices, and development of adaptive algorithms to ensure optimum transmitter performance over the entire temperature range.
