Research abstract

As noted in a Congressional Budget Cost Report in 1999, each flight hour for an H-60 helicopter costs approximately $12,000 per hour of flight. A properly-designed training device for LSE Students could supplement or replace live helicopter flight hours, and has the potential to provide LSE’s that are better trained to handle Emergency Conditions as well saving a great deal of money. This Phase II proposal describes the process used by CATI to develop and commercialize a “Virtual Flight Deck Training System” (VFDTS) that will consist of separate training devices for both the LSE School and the HCO School. The proposal also describes how the VFDTS will utilize the COTS hardware and software selected during Phase I of the SBIR, as well as how the “Hand Signal Recognition System” proposed by DCS Corporation under their Phase I SBIR will be subcontracted by CATI and integrated with the VFDTS.
