Research abstract

Triton Systems Inc. proposes this Phase II follow on program to build a full-scale thermoplastic ramp for a Landing Craft, Air Cushioned (LCAC) vehicle, and to validate the product solution developed in Phase I. Triton’s Phase I concept offers reduced weight (>30%) and lifecycle costs, with equal or greater strength and impact resistance versus the current aluminum ramp. The composite ramp’s fabrication cost is also comparable to aluminum’s. The impact from a beaching and unloading maneuver is considered the critical loading, and will drive the structural design of the composite ramp system. To meet the impact and strength performance, the best lightweight material approach is the use of advanced thermoplastic composite materials.
