Research abstract

We shall develop and commercialize ModelTimeTM, an integrated modeling and visualization software package for performing real-time schedulability analysis and synthesis. It will be capable of extensive timing analysis capabilities and contain a modern graphical user interface. We shall also develop a code translation environment called ModelAdaTM that while translating multi-tasking Ada code to C/C++ will also automatically capture a timing model that can be directly fed to ModelTime. ModelAda will be tightly integrated into popular integrated development environments. Finally, we will also develop a tool called ModelBin2CTM to translate binary programs into C/C++ code while tracking their execution time characteristics. Working prototypes of ModelTime, ModelAda and ModelBin2C were successfully built and demonstrated during our Phase I effort. We now propose to (a) add significant new analytical capabilities including end-to-end timing analysis of multiple software patterns and hardware configurations, timing isolation paradigms, COTS operating system support, synthetic binding of software to hardware, (b) add comprehensive support in ModelAda for Ada 83 and Ada 85 language features, (c) complete and integrate a state-of-the-art user-interface, (c) validate ModelTime and ModelAda features on a host of complete case-studies. We also propose (1) a powerful simulation facility to enumerate the timing behaviors of distributed systems, (2) end-user extensibility for custom analytical techniques and code-generation support for other languages like Real-Time Java.
