Research abstract

The hybrid-electric technology being developed by LRG in this Phase II effort is a key enabling technology for the U. S. Navy. This hybrid electric drive train will provide a foundation for further research and development into electric propulsion, payloads requiring electric power, and high-speed hull design based on electric propulsors. This hybrid electric drive system will also support the development and deployment of mission objectives that reduce manning criteria or remove the U. S. personnel from high-risk areas entirely through unmanned operations; a few examples of this include port security and mine counter-measures. As an example of future support, the hybrid electric drive system will enable extended surveillance and reconnaissance missions based high energy density fuels that are being developed in the laboratories today.
