Research abstract
The overall objective of this project is to determine if Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Time of Flight measurement techniques can be used to enable Unattended Ground Sensors to self-localize. Self-localization would enable systems of ground sensors to provide geographically tagged alarm information thus greatly increasing the value of the reported data. In Phase I, Time Domain produced and field-verified a propagation model that predicts the system’s operational range as a function of transmit power and antenna heights. Time of Flight range measurement and localization were demonstrated. Time Domain also identified the limits of operation and recommended improvements. The system capabilities were found to be consistent with the requirements of a specific transitionable project. Phase I results included describing a path to miniaturization of the hardware and recommending a plan to implement the improvements. The project culminated with a demonstration of a real time, four-node network of Unattended Ground Sensors. In Phase II, Time Domain proposes to execute the development plan. We will demonstrate baseline UWB ranging performance on a platform that can be miniaturized in cost, size, mass and power consumption. In addition, we will engage a specific transition partner for a Phase III effort.
