Research abstract

The local magnetic field within the undersea environment holds particular interest to the Navy in multiple applications including mapping, unexploded ordinance detection and bottomed submarines. In support of the Navy’s expanding role for AUVs for this application, NanoSonic will construct and integrate a magnetic sensing system with an ONR sponsored AUV. This system will consist of a self-contained pod with data logging and signal processing for noise reduction. Initially, magnetic sensing will be employed for mapping a specified undersea region. Its function will be examined using simulation methods to verify and improve function. Signal processing for noise reduction will be developed with simulation models, implemented and tested. Source localization will be the second effort for functional implementation; this will also evolve through detailed simulation. As final tasks, each of these functionalities will undergo field trials with the AUV. NanoSonic will work with university researchers who have specific experience with small, inexpensive AUVs and their cooperative networks. In addition to working with our university partner, NanoSonic will work with a major defense contractor for underwater systems. The NanoSonic PI has direct experience in the defense industry on sensor, propagation and cooperative identification problems through unclassified and classified efforts.
