Research abstract

The objective of this program is to identify and effectively deal with the most significant sources of artifacts and noise in reconstructed Computed Tomography (CT) images of large solid rocket motors (SRMs). Artifacts and noise can mask the presence of defects and subtle changes in composition due to aging that can compromise the reliability and performance of the SRMs. Additionally, artifacts can be misinterpreted as critical SRM defects by either manual inspectors or automated image evaluation tools. During Phase I, the most significant artifacts will be characterized and methods will be developed to reduce or remove artifacts, noise and CT number variability in SRM CT images, without introducing data loss. In Phase II, the methods for handling artifacts, noise and CT number variability will be extended to the prototype level and extensive testing will be performed. After Phase II is completed, the results can then be finalized into hardware and software upgrades to be delivered to Hill Air Force Base for use at the Minuteman missile CT inspection facilities. The successful completion of this program will provide the Air Force with significantly improved accuracy in SRM CT evaluations.
