Research abstract

This program targets manufacturing improvements for the production of high performance SiC optical mirrors using Trex’s patented chemical vapor composite (CVC) process. The end result will be a rapid, robust, and scalable method for making stiff, lightweight SiC optics suitable for insertion into various DoD programs, with special emphasis on space-based cryogenic surveillance applications. The Phase II technical objectives are to deliver a lightweight ribbed CVC SiC mirror designed and manufactured to the STSS program specifications as defined by Raytheon (STSS Prime) and to increase the maturity and scale of Trex’s manufacturing process. To meet these objectives, Trex will design and fabricate a 500 mm aperture mirror for testing with our partners at ITT.
