Research abstract

The work will develop a large asymmetric payload fairing for use in launching over-sized payloads. Issues to be addressed include the reduction of aerodynamic forces to maintain stability and control, strength and weight of the fairing, control of aerodynamic buffet, and attenuation of dynamic loads during launch. The work will focus on aero-structural design optimization of the fairing to address these issues. The work will address a specific payload concept, but the design methods will be applicable to any payload fairing.
