Research abstract

The objective of this project is to create an environmentally-resistant airfield joint sealant that exceeds the requirements of the Federal Specifications and the Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS). The currently used single component silicone airfield joint sealants are relatively expensive and have notoriously low chemical resistance. The innovative approach to the chemistry of sililated polyurethanes (SPURs), which combine the principles of silane and polyurethane chemistry, allowed POLYMERight to develop cost-effective urethane oligomers that can be cured by atmospheric moisture. After proper formulation, the sealants based on these resins demonstrate all the properties necessary to replace the silicone-based sealant formulations In the course of Phase I work POLYMERight has developed an innovative less expensive and more chemically-stable one-component sealant that retains the good properties of silicones, but retains high adhesion to concrete and elastomeric properties after frequent short-term heating cycles that occur during the aircraft take-offs and landings. In the course of Phase II POLYMERight proposes to evaluate this sealant, refine its formulation, test and field-demonstrate its application, and prepare for its commercialization.
