Research abstract

The capability to store multiple levels of classified data within the same device is required within the Navy. This proposal describes alternative solutions, issues with the required capability, and an approach for assessing the solutions. This approach is based on Trusted Computer Solutions' Trusted Development Process (TDP), which has proven successful in developing commercial multilevel and cross-domain products used within DoD and the Intelligence Communities. Potential solutions include multilevel data storage using a multilevel operating system, encryption, data labeling, and hybrid architectures. Protocols such as SCSI, SCSI over IP, Fibre Channel, HyperSCSI, or network attached storage may be used with these solutions. The TDP is a structured process that is based on the Capability Maturity Model Integration Software Model. This process begins with a requirements review, progresses from design specification to initial development of high risk items and final development and documentation of all aspects of the product.
