Research abstract

During Phase I, MARK Resources demonstrated that: (1) real-time radar discrimination of BMD targets is feasible at S-band up to large aspect angles, through measurements of target shape, dimensions, and motion, plus positions and characteristics of target scatterers, and (2) the fusion of measurements at S-band and X-band improves discrimination performance by enabling the extraction of features not measurable at either band, and by reducing the total dwell required on each object. These capabilities require that measurements be made with our Complex-Image Analysis technology, which dispenses with the simplifying assumptions that limit the performance of conventional radar processing. During Phase II, we propose to refine and automate the algorithms developed in Phase I and, in cooperation with Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors, to demonstrate that they can satisfactorily solve the problem of discriminating decoys and other objects of the threat cloud from RVs, using near-term sea-based BMD radars. Discrimination performance will be demonstrated by fully automated processing of real and simulated data of objects in the threat cloud, in an environment that emulates near-real-time processing. We will establish the capability of the algorithms to work in real time and will identify a transition path into near-term sea-based BMD radars.
