Research abstract

Numerous power sources are currently in use by the US military. Over 80% of the logistics re-supply is battlefield fuel. Diesel generators have been traditionally employed for both stationary and portable power units. Where weight and volume are presently a major concern the military is seeking to build air portable units to replace diesel-based power with alternate energy sources (AES). Such sources include advanced batteries, solar power units, hydrogen and fuel cell generators, etc. and, when properly integrated into power modules (hybrid systems), can be used with field deployed missile, radar, and communication system as well as military shelters and tactical bases. Among all possible energy sources, hybrid systems provide the most versatile solutions for meeting the diverse needs of the Future Weapon Systems. This project will evaluate military power requirements and develop a detailed technical analysis of AES, outlining systems capabilities and practical use.
