Research abstract

In future designs of penetrating weapons, there is a need to provide a bi-directional communications link between the surface and the penetrating weapon. We call this concept the Penetrator Data Link (PDL). We describe a Phase II effort to further design, develop, and test a shock-hardened prototype of a multi-channel, CDMA, spread-spectrum data link for a application in penetrating munitions. The wireless, electromagnetic (EM), data link concept that we have developed is designed to be a robust communications link in dissipative and dispersive propagation media. Our approach is designed to operate at very low-latencies. The eventual implementation of this concept into a shock-hardened design has been considered at all times and we see no inherent limitations of this concept that would prevent a shock-hardened hardware design.
