Research abstract

Although the full impact of corrosion cannot be quantified due to the limited amount of reliable data, current cost estimates, readiness and safety data indicate that corrosion substantially effects military equipment and infrastructure. An estimate of $1 billion per year was recently reported as the Navy's cost for aircraft corrosion. Valid estimates of the magnitude of corrosion costs and the relative distribution of those costs among various aircraft types and system and subsystems are needed to determine the most efficient, effective way to allocate resources for corrosion control programs. The Phase 1 effort will demonstrate that a cost modeling methodology can accurately determine corrosion costs and develop modeling concepts that will predict cost savings from the implementation of new corrosion control technologies or changes in maintenance policies. In Phase 1, the conceptual cost models will be developed with an open architecture of adaptability and ability to accommodate variance in parameters.
