Research abstract

The overall objective is to develop a cost effective, solid state, linear, 200-watt amplifier, with an instantaneous bandwidth of 200 to 2500 MHz, designed to serve in a military mobile communication environment. The amplifier will be driven by multi mode, complex modulation exciters. The broadband capability combined with an efficient design will simplify mobile system logistics. An overall amplifier efficiency greater than 30% [present broadband systems achieve an overall typical efficiency of only 10%] and size compatible with typical military mobile systems represents the state of the art technology that is now the goal of all military organizations. This is evident from the existing Joint Tactical Communication programs. During Phase I, TPTI has developed small, highly efficient, class AB power amplifier stages and broadband power combining apparatus that significantly reduce the size and cost of the proposed broadband amplifier system. The goal for TPTI is to engineer and integrate the modules, through the Phase II program, and provide an affordable, field worthy product to the US military. Additional testing of the amplifier, in military platforms is proposed to commence during the option program.
