Research abstract

American warfighters must use, and be properly trained in the use of, night vision goggles to maintain our superiority in the modern battlefield. The training must be for realistic weather conditions encountered in the battlefield. The system currently used to insert weather effects into the NVG training and has limited capabilities. The proposed system will overcome the limitations of the current system. Specifically the system we propose will: 1. have highly realistic, radiometrically accurate weather and atmospheric effects; 2. include a comprehensive library of weather effects; 3. allow every trainee to simultaneously use the system and be highly mobile. To meet the program objectives Ontar will combine recognized state of the art atmospheric and weather computer simulation models with continually variable "weather injection" technology to develop the Night Vision Goggle - Weather Prediction Technology (NVG- WPT) system. At the conclusion of Phase I (and the Phase I option period) we will deliver to the USN/USMC a demonstration system (software and hardware) that meets these objectives.
