Research abstract

Triton Systems Inc has teamed with the University of Delaware – Center for Composite Materials (UDel-CCM) to address current deficiencies in advanced carbon fiber polymer matrix composites such as loss in properties at high temperature and long-term thermo-oxidative aging, as well as microcracking during cryogenic cycling, to significantly widen their usable temperature range. Triton’s approach is to disperse specially treated nanoparticles into the high temperature resin to increase its resistance to degradation under long – term thermal aging and cryogenic cycling. Improvements seen in composite properties in Phase I, at relatively small loadings, are expected to yield a stronger composite with higher operating temperatures (550F), higher thermal-oxidative stability and reduced microcracking at cryogenic temperatures.
