Research abstract

Driven by the need to operate in acoustically challenging littoral environments, the need for high-channel count, high frequency hull mounted arrays have created a demand for high performance, low cost telemetry electronics suitable for these SONAR arrays. The proposed telemetry approach leverages the Phase I SBIR effort, existing TAIPT and Total Ship Monitoring telemetry systems, and provides an Acoustic Rapid COTS Insertion (ARCI) approach to provide a high bandwidth, low cost, common telemetry system suitable for multiple hull mounted array sensor systems. This telemetry approach uses a proven two-level telemetry architecture that combines a high bandwidth scaleable SONET network with low cost, simple, high-speed bit serial sensor telemetry. This telemetry approach is able to synchronize thousands of distributed hull mounted and towed sensors over the common acquisition network. The standard networked based telemetry design simplifies connections and data distribution to inboard processing resources.
