Research abstract

Directed Energy (DE) refers to a wide range of technologies involving concentrated electromagnetic energy or atomic or subatomic particles. DE technologies are rapidly advancing, and practical application of DE technologies is resulting in Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) and other DE devices for military and commercial use. Currently, one of the most widely used and rapidly advancing types of DE is laser energy. As military use of laser technologies increases the likelihood of laser related injuries increases, and combat casualty care (CCC) providers need to be equipped to handle these injuries. There exists an opportunity for training CCC providers given that minimal training currently exists in this area. Sapien Systems proposes to develop an Electronic Directed Energy Training System (EDETS) to address the human impacts of laser energy exposure and medical treatment protocols. EDETS will be an innovative, technology-delivered training system. It will integrate conceptual, procedural, and case-based learning techniques while using of a variety of media to add interest and instructional value. The EDETS comprehensive training curriculum will target a tri-service audience with varying levels of medical expertise. The EDETS training system will be available via the Web, CD-ROM, and in a printed manual.
