Research abstract

The objective of this Phase I project is to demonstrate a Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) solution for the TH-1H Helicopter that meets the U.S. Air Force requirements. This objective will be accomplished by installing a HUMS that provides full-time access to the aircraft data bus, so that both the HUMS and relevant flight data information can be reviewed. Furthermore, a Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder (CVFDR) will be added. The system, installed on a single demonstration aircraft, will present a comprehensive description of the aircraft’s usage and component-level health through an easy-to-understand video interface. A unique capability of the HUMS will make it convenient for the Vibration Program Management Office (VPMO) to make adjustments, like modifying analysis methods, changing display units, and adjusting alarm thresholds. Having easy access to the HUMS and bus flight data will satisfy the requirements of the VPMO as well as support the Air Force’s Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP), while the information recorded on the CVFDR will help in the event of a mishap. The system installed will have the ability to take measurements, like strain, that can be used to assess structural components. Working with the VPMO to develop a custom installation package, including specifics with regards to customization needs, and scheduling the on-site installation and evaluation will occur. The project is structured to reduce initial investment, within the confines of a Phase I budget, and also provide a means to reduce future investments should the Air Force elect to pursue Phase II for the project. Not only will the HUMS enable ground crews to identify degrading components before they become flight-critical, but the system will also enable the owner to more effectively plan maintenance and reduce aircraft downtime, thus improving fleet readiness. It is anticipated that the capabilities developed for the TH-1H will port to other rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft flatforms, enhancing commercialization opportunities for other platforms. As a result, our products will be desirable for a wider range of aircraft users and fleet managers. Development of this system for the TH-1H will improve mission readiness by simplifying operations, like RT&B and vibe checks, as well as improve maintenance logistics. As a result, there are significant opportunities to improve safety and operations of the TH-1H platform while providing improved commercialization opportunities for the developer.
