Research abstract

The expanding use of composites in shipboard applications is driving the development of fire-resistant composite structures. However, despite significant efforts in improving the resins and cores of composite sandwich structures, passive fire protection (e.g., insulation) is still required. Currently, the Navy uses glass fiber or mineral wool insulation panels that are mechanically fastened to the composite structures. The replacement of these relatively heavy insulation boards with a lighter weight alternative is the focus of this proposal. Adherent Technologies, Inc. is proposing the development of a low density, sprayable silicone foam system for this application. Sprayable formulations would dramatically decrease the labor costs for installation of passive fire protection. Silicone foam fire barriers are known; several commercial versions are available. In contrast to the systems proposed here, these are relatively high density and would not provide a significant weight savings relative to current systems. Additionally, the formulations are not sprayable and considerable labor is required for application. The system proposed by Adherent Technologies would lead to significant weight savings and would also be easy to apply, thereby resulting in significant cost savings to the Navy by reducing labor costs for outfitting passive fire barrier systems.
