Research abstract
Current computed tomography (CT) techniques for nondestructive testing (NDT) of munitions and other non-medical specimens often produce inferior imagery due to artifacts, impairing detection, identification, and measurement of anomalies. In this Phase II, JDLL generalizes its Phase I artifact-reducing CT algorithms to 3D cone-beam configurations, testing these algorithms against real data, permanently implementing these algorithms on a prototype cone-beam CT system, and producing a commercially viable product set that will be useful throughout the industrial CT NDT community. JDLL’s approach adaptively modifies the individual x-ray measurements in a non-uniform manner, reversing the effect of failure of the underlying CT data acquisition assumptions for each particular application. Our commercialization partners include: ATK/Thiokol, ATK/ABL (solid propulsion, munitions, ordnance), RevealImaging (airport security), and Breakaway Imaging (CT imaging for surgeons in the operating room).
