Research abstract

Foam Matrix has developed an integrated actuator concept that is applicable to the rudders used on the LCAC. The concept developed eliminates all of the external mechanical controls and replaces them with a system designed to fit into a molded in place cavity on a control surface such as the LCAC rudders. The system has many advantages including lower part count; reduced purchases cost, and notably in the case of the LCAC increase reliability. In Phase I we performed the cost studies to show the potential savings of the concept. Reliability calculations were used to determine the lifecycle cost of the system as compared to the existing system. In phase II we will fabricate and test, including environmental test, the concept using a production representative rudder and prototype actuator. Foam Matrix will be working closely with Hamilton Sundstrand for actuator technology and using the University of New Orleans for reliability assessments and verification.
