Research abstract

Universal Modular Masts (UMM) are non-hull penetrating masts designed for advanced submarine systems. The UMM was developed for the Virginia Class Submarines, and is in production for both the Virginia and SSGN. The UMM approach is to have a common, universal mast design which can support all the sensors and antennas housed in the sail for above-water use at periscope depth. The current UMM made out of UNS 32750/32760 stainless steel, resists corrosion, and is reliable, but is heavy. Composites offer the means to significantly reduce the weight of the UMM. During Phase II, structural composite materials for Universal Mast Module components will be developed, and the material’s mechanical and physical properties will be characterized. Manufacturing processes to economically fabricate Universal Mast Module components will be developed. Finite element structural analysis will be used to evaluate design structural performance and to model underwater explosive shock loads. Drawings of the final conceptual designs will be developed and prototype 1st stage composite fairing prototypes will be built and tested.
