Research abstract

Waveband Corporation offers to demonstrate a portable 3D visual anatomic guidance system to help medics in the battlefield take high quality ultrasound (US) scans and transmit this information to doctors at a remote location. The product is an advanced real-time visual interface that provides expert assistance in performing diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound on the battlefield. WaveBand's solution is a rugged, portable easily deployable visual back pack system used to examine the injured in far-forward conditions. Using the built-in guidance functions and telemedicine module, lower-skilled medics can acquire and transmit US scans to higher-skilled clinicians at a remote telemedicine facility. The prototype 3D anatomically guided ultrasound device (3D-AGUD) visualizes "holomer" data sets (MRI & CT) of soldiers obtained prior to battle. These volumetric data sets and a high fidelity generic 3D model of the human body provide active computer assistance to the medic by displaying the way the ultrasound probe image plane moves toward the specified anatomic location as the ultrasound probe is manipulated over the soldier's body. We employ Digital Human Technology (DHT) and image guided external registration techniques to measure the 3D motion of the probe and register its location to the precise features of the patient's body.
