Research abstract

Veritay proposes to continue development of an expulsion system for a 5-inch gun round that dispenses numerous kinetic energy penetrators as the round approaches the target. One of the most important aspects of the design involves devising a system for effectively dispensing the payload from inside the round to create a uniform penetrator pattern over a large footprint. Additionally, they must be dispersed at a high-velocity in a controlled manner to ensure maximum penetration and lethality. An existing round, the MK-182 Kinetic-Energy Electronic-Timed round, dispenses tungsten alloy BBs out the rear of the projectile at a velocity of 150 ft/sec. The objective of the proposed Phase II effort is to develop a system that will deploy the non-energetic payload in the forward direction rather than the rearward direction. In so doing, the payload kinetic energy can be increased by 2-5 times, thereby substantially increasing the lethality of the round. The specific objectives of the Phase II effort are to refine the Phase I design to maximize the forward payload expulsion velocity and improve the penetrator dispersion characteristics. The development effort will focus on component development and integration with a full-scale functional demonstration at the conclusion of the Phase II program.
