Research abstract

MicroAssembly Technologies and Lawrence Livermore National Labs aim to develop low-cost MEMS spatial light modulators for adaptive optics correction and vibration/jitter control. MEMS SLMs can provide significant Strehl ratio improvements. However, available devices are severely limited by fabrication technology, resulting in low yields and high costs, which is prohibitive for most military applications, and essentially all commercial applications. Other considerations include the necessity for high stroke, tip-tilt-piston capability, and extremely flat mirror facets.
