Research abstract

Second Generation High Temperature Superconductor (2G) wire is providing new capabilities critical for various military applications. The enhanced flux pinning at 65K, the lower limit for liquid nitrogen cooling, is useful for achieving useful power densities at magnetic fields of 1-3 T. For the use of 2G wires for AC applications substantial modifications are required to the present 2G wire architecture. This proposal aims at the development of a novel 2G wire architecture. The main advantages are low ac losses and a simplification of magnet design and construction. Demonstration of the concept will include a practical approach to stabilization of the conductor.
