Research abstract

To address DARPA interest in a revolutionary air filtration technology that both captures and neutralizes chemical and biological agents with high efficiency and low resistance to airflow, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a novel Nanoporous Photocatalytic Filter (NPF). NPF is based on a new filtering medium, which will serve as a matrix for the induction of a cold glow plasma discharge and photocatalytic reaction. This technology has a higher capture efficiency, longer lifetime, and lower pressure drop than state-of-the-art approaches, and the NPF filter is self-cleaning and easily regenerable. The NPF system will help protect military personnel, first responders, and the public from chemical and biological agents. In Phase I POC will design and fabricate an NPF prototype and demonstrate the proof-of-concept. Phase II will culminate in a compact filter suitable for testing with live agents at Government-selected facilities.
