Research abstract
Ceramic matrix composites have potential to meet many of the high temperature structural requirements for advanced military aircraft. One new material made from CG Nicalon fiber and polymer derived SiNC matrix may provide a preferred option for some applications. However, it has not been evaluated for hot corrosion for Navy applications. This program addresses the need to understand how it behaves in salt environments and proposes a Si3N4 coating approach to improve mechanical stability in hot corrosion environments.
