Research abstract

Triton Systems proposes this Phase II SBIR program to design, develop and fabricate compact one-piece integral and/or multi-component seals for the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV). The Triton Integrated Multi-functional Seal (TIMS) will provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, corrosion reduction/elimination, and air/water-tight environmental sealing per EFV requirements. The TIMS combines several innovative additives in an elastomeric base. Three integral seal designs will be developed and prototyped, in order to address the three EFV sealing requirements: 1) armor panels, 2) hatches, and 3) bolt on panels. The proposed TIMS seals will provide >60 dB EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) in the frequency range of 10 KHz to 40 GHz even after 1000 hours salt fog exposure, and will have minimal compression set (20-40%) for good environmental sealing. Compared to traditional silver- and nickel-filled silicone gaskets (which oxidize over time and demonstrate significant degradation in EM shielding and surface and volume resistivity), Triton's innovative gasket material is environmentally-stable on both land and sea, prolonging seal life and maximizing EFV mission readiness and effectiveness.
