Research abstract

Genex Technologies, Inc. proposes in this SBIR Phase II effort to design, prototype, and test a novel low-cost, low-power, miniature, manually deployable image sensor network that we have dubbed “D-STUDS™ (Disposable Small Tactical Ubiquitous Detection Sensors™)”. D-STUDS will be able to provide both visible and near infrared (NIR) video surveillance for all day/night/weather operations. The D-STUDS sensors will be small enough to deploy manually and will communication via adhoc wireless network communication channels to form a distributed sensor network. The goal is to detect anyone entering a perimeter zone that could pose a threat to friendly forces. Based upon our Phase I feasibility study, we believe that we can achieve reliable detection in a variety of operational environments using a network of tiny imaging “smart sensors” that can see in the day and the night. Genex’s approach is to utilize its miniature Smart Optical Sensor™ (SOS) smart recording system and SmartDetect™ algorithm to evaluate the performance of the algorithm and each component of the system in a variety of operational environments, and design and prototype the D-STUDS smart sensor following a spiral development model.
