Research abstract

Mississippi Polymer Technologies Inc. (MPT) proposes to develop a new generation of polymeric lightweight ammunition weighing approximately 1/3 less than existing brass ammunition. Previous efforts to develop polymer-cased ammunition have failed primarily because of problems associated with choice of case materials. During Phase I, MPT has demonstrated proof of concept overcoming these issues. During Phase II, MPT will make the final material and manufacturing method selections, followed by extensive ballistic, utility and environmental stability testing. To aid in the development, MPT will utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to guide in the final design of the cartridge cases with maximum weight savings. In parallel to the technology effort, MPT plans to focus on transitioning the lightweight ammunition into the DOD inventory through co-development activities with Alliant TechSystems (ATK), funded through the Phase II Option. At the conclusion of the Phase II effort, MPT intends to have a technology package of lightweight .50 caliber ammunition ready for Type Classification.
