Research abstract

The Phase I results give encouragement Phase II goals of a specific energy of 1 kWhr/kg and an energy density of 1 kWh/liter for a 20 W system and a 1 kWh mission are achievable under the following conditions: optimization of cathode catalyst and catalyst layer formulations to obtain higher and sustainable operating power density; optimization of bipolar stack design for minimum weight and size; optimization of system concept and hardware for minimum weight and size; and implementation of a fuel delivery strategy that is consistent with acceptably low loss of methanol vapor in the mixed-feed discharge.
