Research abstract

Converting bulk liquid fuel into a finely atomized mist is the standard method for homogeneously mixing it with the air essential for combustion. In military field situations logistic-fuels like JP8 are easy to supply but are viscous and less filtered making them difficult to micro-atomize and combust in burners other than the large engines of heavy-equipment. The traditional strategy for micro-atomizing any liquid is to drive it through an orifice with sufficient force that it breaks into small droplets. Cascade Designs, Inc. believes the smallest and safest system can be made by employing a vaporization strategy. The recently renamed state-of-the-art Capillary Force Vaporizer (CFV) developed by Vapore, Inc. (formerly called the Capillary Pump or "CP") is an elegant solid-state device that processes liquid fuel through the management of thermal energy. It eliminates the need for a mechanical pressure generating device and a pressurizable fuel tank, meaning the overall device can be made lighter, safer, and smaller. Phase I work has demonstrated the feasibility of this approach. A Micro-Atomizing Logistic-Fuel Delivery System can provide the means to power a new generation of versatile man-portable appliances.
