Research abstract

Energid Technologies proposes a realistic haptics-optional simulator designed for surgical training. The design is modular, with components that can build simulations for different applications and levels of fidelity--with and without haptics feedback. The simulation interface is untethered, without a physical connection to surgical tools. Machine vision is used to track the tools, and a novel large-workspace magnetic force generator is used to provide haptic feedback. These are combined with 3D visualization to provide a natural environment for training. Training scenarios are defined using an XML-based Surgical Simulation and Training Markup Language (SSTML). Any procedure defined using the SSTML can be downloaded from a server for immediate use. Energid Technologies will create three trainer prototypes. A software-only home version will teach surgeries on home computers. A library trainer will include high-fidelity vision and tracking hardware to measure and train a larger set of procedures. A laboratory version will use haptics feedback. These trainers will teach and measure students and residents and provide continued learning to experienced surgeons.
