Research abstract
The US EPA is considering implementation of stringent new regulations on the emission of toxic metals from Hazardous Waste Combustors by June,2005. Triton Systems responds to the US Army's need for advanced technologies for enhanced removal of lead, cadmium and mercury from their demilitarization incinerator plants. Triton's proposed approach is based on in-situ capture of the metal contaminants in the combustor zone of the incinerator using novel nano-scale sorbent particles. Triton will build on their promising Phase I results, where we have shown up to a seven- fold improvement in the capture of heavy metals from the gas stream. The uniqueness of the approach is that the capture of metal contaminants take place in the combustion chamber itself, thereby eliminating the formation of hazardous sub-micron particles. The Phase II research will focus on optimization of nano-scale sorbents downselected from the Phase I effort. This technology will result in the development of novel sorbent materials with high removal efficiency for effective flue gas clean up. Triton has already established an agreement with a commercial design company to commercially implement the technology, which involves equipment and installation design at the end of Phase II.
