Research abstract
A key disadvantage of currently available perimeter detection systems (PDS) is that they are detectable via their `signatures' (visual, RF, thermal), and hence can be easily defeated. As such, a cost-effective, passive, unobtrusive, undetectable PDS system that can be scaled to large perimeters (a few kms) -- while being easy to deploy and operate -- is critically needed for a large variety of intrusion detection and surveillance applications for both the military and the civilian sectors. This program focuses on the design, implementation and demonstration of a PDS system based on WDM multiplexing of an array of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, that can demonstrate advanced functionality such as location-finding, direction-finding and intruder classification (e.g. human, animal, light-vehicle), both by weight and speed. In addition, the approach to PDS system scalability to arbitrarily large sizes (several kms) will be demonstrated.
