Research abstract

Triton Systems has joined with a leading academic institution and two leading transparent armor manufacturers to address the US Army’s requirement for new material technologies for next generation multifunctional transparent, lightweight armor. Current transparent armor systems use hybrid laminar structure of acrylic, polycarbonate and glass. Current generation transparent armor often use an acrylic face sheet which does not have the hardness coupled with elastic modulus to handle the wide range of threats confronting the Warfighter. Triton has successfully developed a transparent armor (TAF), in Phase I, which can serve as an improved “face sheet” thus delivering enhanced ballistic performance. The Phase II program will bring validation to properly assess the value proposition of TAF in an optimized multilayer laminated armor system. We have developed a comprehensive plan to specifically tackle five sets of milestones; (1) a more comprehensive understanding of the materials design criteria and their associated impact on the ballistic, optical and EMI effectiveness; (2) Definition and integration of key ballistic performance criteria into specific materials properties; (3) Scale up the ballistic materials from lab scale to 6”x6” sheets; (4) design of optimum ballistic laminate structure; and (5) validation of ballistic performance within each threat category.
