Research abstract

This Phase II SBIR program will continue development of a high frequency, pulse reverse electroosmosis technology, for control of leaching and groundwater intrusion in contaminated sites. The program goal is a toolbox for assisting site selection by U.S. Army personnel, by enabling offsite, advance design of fielded systems. This system will be applicable to multiple sites and environments and will be user-friendly. In the Phase II program, Prof. Alan West of Columbia University will develop a theoretical modeling of high frequency, pulse reverse electroosmotic processes, Terran Corporation will identify and select three sites of interest to the Program Officer, and Faraday will design, install and monitor 3 large scale and 3 full scale prototype high frequency pulse reverse electroosmosis systems on media from sites of interest. These prototype systems will provide a transition from bench scale experiments to field deployment. Terran will design field installations and develop guidelines and operating procedures for field installations. Successful completion of the technical objectives will demonstrate and validate the feasibility of our approach to the development of a pulse/pulse reverse technology for control of water flow in landfills or contaminated sites.
