Research abstract
During GASR Phase I, we designed an ad-hoc solution for a UAV communications network, in order to augment the satellite's role in the battlefield. We ran an exhaustive set of simulations in OPNET that demonstrate the GASR solution's superiority to conventional ad-hoc approaches. For Phase II, we turn our focus toward implementation and deployment of the GASR networking protocol. Recognizing the considerable momentum that the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) has acquired, we are proposing the implementation of the GASR protocols aboard an SCA-compliant software defined radio platform. Phase II will conclude with a demonstration in a dynamic environment that will verify the results of our Phase I research. Specific corner cases will be investigated to prove that GASR provides improved utilization of terrestrial based routes as opposed to high cost satellite channels, while still maintaining the satellite route in reserve as a viable communications route. The GASR protocol will also be demonstrated to provide intelligent routing around jamming threats, improved load balancing to avoid network congestion, and fast hand-off times. At the end of Phase II, the GASR protocols will be proven in the field on an SCA compliant platform, poised for technology insertion in the industry.
