Research abstract

The specification of the MULE electric drive motor calls for constant power output from 28rpm to 280rpm. The physical envelope requirement is 14 inch outside diameter and no longer than 4 inches. Additionally the motor must provide for High torque at start up of1200 ft-lbs at 28 rpm for 500 seconds or 8.33 minutes. Heat removal at this high current and torque will need to be removed at a rate equal to that generated. The electric motor will be assisted by the use of an internal gearbox of approximately 8:1. The higher motor speed will increase the voltage and reduce the current required to obtain the required torque at low speed. The ThinGap motor construction with low speed related losses should perform well under these conditions.
