Research abstract

The U. S. Army recognizes the need for a safe, portable battery that can be used as a charger to recharge small lithium-ion batteries such as LI7 land warrior battery. The successful completion of Phase I project demonstrates the feasibility of defining the design and dimension of such charger battery leads to the development of prototype charger. A novel electrochemical couple will be used for the development of a safe high specific energy lithium-ion battery system, which provides enhanced safety and can function as a charger. The proposed anode material, which delivers 50% higher practical capacity than the state-of-the-art carbon anode materials, will be used to address the safety issues. Several prototypes 16 Ah lithium-ion cells will be developed and tested for their use as charger. Five of these cells will be connected in series to build a 16 Ah, 21 V battery with control circuitry. The developed battery will then be converted to a charger with a DC/DC converter having an output of 16 A at 16.8 V.
