Research abstract

An innovative approach is proposed that combines two powerful computational methodologies for fusing missile plume model predictions with sensor measurements to produce highly accurate missile signature databases. The first methodology, A-SCOPE (Automatic Simultaneous Constraint Optimization for Parameter Extraction) automatically extracts optimal inputs to the government standard plume signature prediction codes that: (1) are physically realistic within their known covariance, and (2) produce signatures that are the most consistent with sensor measurements. Enhancements to the suite of codes that compute nozzle and plume flowfields, and plume radiation are made via the use of Automatic Differentiation (AD), such that parameter sensitivities are output in addition to the standard outputs. The technique has already been successfully demonstrated for passive ranging of rocket plumes at long ranges. The second methodology, MODEX compares plume signature predictions and sensor measurements to derive extrapolation factors, which anchor the predictions to the data. These factors are then used at off-measurement conditions to create a database of signatures at all possible viewing conditions, flight parameters and spectral regions. MODEX has been validated for in-band radiometric measurements and will be extended to account for spectral, spatial and temporal signature parameters. Both methodologies will be structured for use within user friendly, tested toolkits, providing optimal utility. When used in combination, A-SCOPE and MODEX will provide a very powerful tool to generate missile signature databases.
