Research abstract

A novel class of micro-thrusters using micro-discharge technology will be developed in this Phase 2 effort. The micro-thrusters will be electrically driven and be suitable for various operations on micro-satellites and nano-satellites. Thrust in the range of 0.1 to 5mN are projected, with variable performance depending on the use of single devices or arrays. Micro-discharges are small aperture discharges characterized by low voltage operation. The Phase 2 effort will further develop this novel technology, build prototypes and improve performance and measure thrust.
