Research abstract
During Phase I TCD investigated the effect on mechanical properties when exposured to direct solar, UV radiation. TCD examined the visual and mechanical changes to Thermoplastic Composites from UV exposure in the following areas; UV Stabilizer Evaluation Mechanical Properties Strength Comparison Surface Degradation For the SBIR Phase II effort TCD will; Design, fabricate, and test prototype composite sandwich panels for UV deterioration, mechanical strength and impact properties in accordance with ASTM E1925 and also produce full size composite panels that fit into existing thermoplastic shelter frames. Three completely thermoplastic composite shelters will be fabricated. Test plans will be developed and mechanical properties will be tested. At the conclusion of Phase II, TCD will; 1)Developed a model that correlates ASTM Method G154-00 to natural UV exposure life cycle. 2)Evaluate other White pigments and glass with greater UV reflectance and/or lower translucency to UV radiation. 3)Developed molds for full sized panel and pilot plant assembly of UV resistant thermoplastic composite shelters. 4)Manufactured and fabricated full size panels and prototype assembly of three (3) thermoplastic composite shelters for long-term UV testing. 5)Execute Long term UV and mechanical testing. 6)Coordinated research efforts into existing government programs.
