Research abstract

Deployment of field-sequential-color displays in Distributed Mission Training (DMT) systems is contingent on effective suppression of motion-induced artifacts. Such displays otherwise commend themselves with respect to resolution, contrast, and frame rate. Adequate artifact suppression has been theoretically established under Phase I. An actual display configured for testing with legacy DMT content would enable accurate evaluation of artifact suppression during smooth tracking of moving objects. A tiled system composed of multiple 4-inch diagonal 100 dpi PDA displays based on Uni-Pixel's TMOS technology shall be configured to display a subset of DMT legacy data. Up to twelve such displays will be assembled in a row, seamlessly or with a prominent seam, to provide a sufficiently large window to test the display's smooth tracking performance. This form factor emulates the lateral dimensions of a 50-inch diagonal DMT display at 100 dpi. The delivered system will establish (1) empirical feasibility of fabricating monolithic TMOS displays at 50-inches diagonal, (2) repeatability in manufacturing PDA-size displays, (3) effectiveness of the artifact suppression mechanisms developed by Uni-Pixel, and (4) the real-world performance of Uni-Pixel's Simple Matrix drive architecture, which enables fabricating both large area displays and ultra-high resolution displays for near-eye and helmet-mounted applications.
