Research abstract
Air-Borne Laser tests involving the shooting down of ballistic missiles are currently scheduled to occur at the end of 2004 or early 2005. If tests are successful, an immediate demand for a deployable system capable of producing chemicals necessary for operation will arise. Case Engineering proposes to complete detailed engineering, construct and demonstrate critical modules for the air-transportable, rapid production, mixed-base hydrogen peroxide system based on the Phase I effort. The proposed Phase II system will be capable of producing 14,500 lbs. (6,570 kg) of MHP in 235 minutes. The system will be disassembled, transported to a demonstration site, reassembled and tested using chemicals. Critical tests using the MHP mixing module will prove that the correct combination of heat transfer area, mixing and chilling capacity will be able to produce target amounts of MHP. Also, design options to decrease the batch time to 155 minutes (2.6 hrs) per batch by merely adding more system components have been identified. Successful testing of the critical modules will provide a basis for firm scale-up design for hardened Phase III MHP production systems. The proposed system can be used for emergency interim MHP production should demand for the Air Borne Laser system be immediate.
